This project addresses the transformations reshaping academic publishing in the digital age. Driven by technological advancements, particularly digitalisation, datafication and artificial intelligence (AI), the scholarly literature is evolving from a collection of research accounts into a data-driven resource.
The project explores four key research lines related to these issues: (i) the epistemic impact of datafied literature, including the types of knowledge produced and valued; (ii) the political economy of scholarly publishing, analysing the commercial exploitation of datafied literature, (iii) the societal implications of AI and datafication in research, considering how these changes affect public access to knowledge, innovation, and ethical concerns; and (iv) the panopticon of scholarly literature, exploring the increased surveillance and control facilitated by digitisation.
As a working group at CAIS, we aim to develop a research agenda, do conceptual groundwork, and develop study protocols and funding applications, allowing longer-term collaboration with the team and CAIS members.
