Reconstruction and theoretical reappraisal of the results of mediatisation research

We are living in the midst of a radical change in media and communication and thus also in a transformation of economic, social, cultural and political living conditions. In communication studies, this development can be described as the current mediatisation push. Computer networks and computers are changing the communicative media and their meaning. A digital, computer-controlled infrastructure is emerging that affects personal identity and social relationships, companies, parties and institutions, and entire areas of society. The mediatisation approach is a comprehensive, theoretical and empirically supported approach to grasping these developments in their form, their historical involvement and also in a critical perspective.

Over the past seven years, I have initiated and coordinated a DFG priority programme “Mediatised Worlds” with a total of 36 projects on this topic. My stay at CAIS will now give me the space to process the experiences I have made, to summarise and further develop my findings, to discuss them in new collaborations and to publish them in books and essays.
