A multi-level analysis of altmetrics: measuring their disciplinary heterogeneity
Altmetrics is an umbrella term formed from the amalgamation of the words alternative and metrics. It refers to non-traditional academic performance metrics derived from online sources such as social media. The use of altmetrics has grown significantly since they were first described in 2011. Their use is still controversial and there is no consensus on their value. Most research points to their usefulness as early indicators of academic citation and as tools for measuring networks and social relevance of research.
In this project, I aim to contribute to this discussion with a multilevel model to measure how well altmetrics index academic impact, measured for example by peer-review ratings or the number of citations after a certain period of time. A multilevel model is a statistical model that considers heterogeneous impact for entities belonging to different categories, e.g. specific academic fields or time periods. The aim is to produce the first comprehensive analysis of heterogeneity in altmetrics for different academic fields.
