Digital Libraries for Malawi

Digitalisation is changing the way we learn and educate ourselves. Not only Europe and Germany should be able to benefit from these opportunities, but also Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. The aim of our project is to use the possibilities of digitalisation to improve and expand access to education (initially) at three Malawian schools. This does not require cost-intensive technical equipment. Instead, our project relies on small computers. The school classes in Malawi are equipped with this simple, energy-efficient and cost-effective technology. The computers contain so-called digital libraries (digital encyclopaedias, e-books, educational videos and learning programmes), with which pupils can continue their education offline despite the lack of an internet connection. A comprehensive pedagogical concept, which is developed in close contact with the teachers on site, integrates the digital libraries into the daily lessons.
In addition, we are conducting an explorative evaluation. With its help, we will further develop the project in order to expand it beyond the pilot schools.
