In November 2024, the first round of the workshop “Polarization: Conceptualization and Methodological Approaches” took place at CAIS in Bochum, organized by the research focus “Social Cohesion in Digital Media Environments.” Researchers discussed initial approaches, projects, and methodological strategies for studying societal polarization. Particular attention was given to the influence of digital media on polarization processes.
Building on these results, the second round of the workshop will take place on 20 and 21 November 2025. The aim of the event is to discuss and further develop current polarization research – especially from a communication studies perspective – and to strengthen researchers’ networks. This time, special emphasis will be placed on the institutionalization of the network.
The workshop provides a platform to present current projects, reflect on developments since the first meeting, and discuss new methodological approaches. Central to the program will be small-group work on key topics such as conceptualizations and operationalizations of societal polarization, normative perspectives on cohesion and pluralism, and the preparation of a potential joint DFG network proposal.
In addition, open questions and research gaps will be systematically identified – from the role of digital media and AI to intragroup polarization, milieus, and societal fragmentation. The program will be complemented by short data and tool demonstrations designed to facilitate exchange on new tools and datasets.
