As part of re:publica 2024 in Berlin, Prof Christoph Bieber answers some questions about the role of artificial intelligence in the run-up to political elections. The format of the Learning Systems platform (@LernendeSysteme) is a YouTube series in which members of the platform answer questions on current topics.

The video statement entitled “AI and elections: Between free opinion-forming and manipulation” sheds light on the challenges and opportunities that the use of AI in election processes entails. The background to the statement was a panel at re:publica 2024 entitled “AI in the super election year 2024”, which discussed the dangers and opportunities of generative AI and recommendation algorithms. The panel asked whether deceptively real-looking photos or videos generated by AI jeopardise citizens’ trust in public discourse and what opportunities these technologies could offer.
