In the current issue of MIT Technology Review (8/2024), Prof Dr Christoph Bieber, research professor at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), is quoted in the article “AI as a weapon in election campaigns” by Wolfgang Stieler. The article sheds light on how generative AI could be used to spread disinformation and the challenges this poses for democracies.

Quote:

[…] On the other hand, “we don’t have any studies that say in no uncertain terms: we had cases of manipulative AI use in x elections in year y,” says Christoph Bieber, for example, who researches digitalisation and democracy at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum. “At the moment, we can’t say the classic sentence: ‘Researchers have found out …’. At most, we can report anecdotally on incidents that have occurred during elections in the Czech Republic or India. But we can’t scientifically prove what effects this ultimately had on the outcome of the election.”
