In 2025, the renowned Grimme Online Awards (GOA) will once again include the presentation of a “Special Award for Artificial Intelligence,” now for the second time. The winner will be announced on October 8, 2025, at the Colosseum Theatre in Essen during the GOA award ceremony. Dr. Matthias Begenat, Head of Science Communication at CAIS, has been reappointed to the jury. He already served as a jury member for the AI Special Award in 2024.
Three projects have been nominated for the AI Special Award. The app “Dawn Chorus” focuses on AI-based recognition of birdsong and represents an outstanding example of “citizen science.” The multimedia scrollytelling project “Eternal You” explores the possibility of an AI-based “revival” of deceased persons into a new, communicative existence as avatars – developed by Moritz Riesewieck and Hans Block, who have already created an award-winning documentary on the topic and became known to a broader public through “The Cleaners.” Also nominated is WDR’s Die Maus theme page on “Artificial Intelligence” – one of the rare offerings targeted specifically at younger audiences.
The jury consisted of Oliver Hinz (HAUS HINZKI), Mina Saidze (AI expert, tech manager, and author; Inclusive Tech), and Dr. Matthias Begenat (CAIS).
