How do political instability and the short-term dissolution of the Bundestag affect the preparation and execution of a federal election? And what specific organizational challenges do municipalities and election officials face – especially with regard to direct voting centers and the participation of Germans living abroad? These are the questions that Christoph Bieber and Aryan Shooshtari from the CAIS research program “Digital Democratic Innovations” will address during this year’s conference of the German Association for Political Science (DVPW). The conference, titled “How is government conducted now?”, will take place on May 22 and 23, 2025 at the Schader Forum in Darmstadt.
About the Talk
On Thursday, May 22 at 4:00 PM, the two CAIS researchers will speak on “Challenges of Election Organization for the 2025 Federal Election.” The focus will be on the results of a survey conducted among election officials responsible for organizing the voting process. Initial assessments from municipalities provide insight into key issues such as communication, logistics, resources, and costs associated with an early federal election. Two aspects stand out in particular: the establishment of so-called direct voting centers for local postal voting and the logistical challenges involved in organizing voting for Germans living abroad.
Two-Day Expert Conference in Darmstadt
In cooperation with the DVPW section “Political System and Governance in the Federal Republic of Germany”, the Schader Foundation is hosting a two-day expert conference that will explore current challenges and perspectives of democratic governance in depth. Political scientists, political practitioners, and media professionals are warmly invited to discuss new impulses for governing in challenging times.
