Henri Mütschele, research associate in CAIS program “Societal Cohesion in Digital Media Environments”, has been selected to participate in a workshop on October 1 at the conference “Protests and Social Movements between Innovation and Tradition” with his contribution titled “Claiming Legitimacy: Continuities and Adaptations in Argumentative Strategies of German Climate Movements”. The conference takes place from October 1 to 2, 2025, at the University of Bremen and is organized by the Institute for Social Movement and Protest Studies (ipb) in cooperation with SOCIUM (Research Center on Inequality and Social Policy), FGZ (Research Institute Social Cohesion), and ZeMKI (Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research).
The conference explores how social movements and protests are shaped both by historical continuity and by ongoing innovation. While collective action is deeply rooted in history, movements continuously develop new forms of organization, strategies for political intervention, and modes of participation. Waves of protest often emerge unexpectedly, as seen in the Arab Spring, Black Lives Matter, Fridays for Future, as well as populist and right-wing mobilizations like PEGIDA or the Yellow Vest movement. Against this backdrop, the IPB Annual Conference invites contributions that examine both historical developments and current or future dynamics. Of particular interest are papers that explore how new technologies or shifting political contexts shape movements, and how the interplay of tradition and innovation influences collective action.
