Ahrabhi Kathirgamalingam, research associate in CAIS program “Societal Cohesion in Digital Media Environments”, presents her paper titled “Deepening Inequalities or Bridging Divides? Tracing Racist Language in German News Media” as part of the event’s panel “Representation at the Crossroads: The Dynamics of Inclusion and Exclusion in Media and Parliamentary Debates” on 28 August 2025. Her longitudinal study investigates the salience of racist language in German media and examines the lexical and thematic contexts in which these terms appear. The analysis focuses on three traditional newspapers (Bild, Die Tageszeitung, Die Welt) and three far-right alternative news outlets (Junge Freiheit, Politically Incorrect News, zuerst) over the period from 2010 to 2022. The findings provide insights into the evolving role of media in shaping narratives around racism and marginalization. The study highlights the potential of journalism to either reinforce social divisions or promote cohesion.
