Digital voting in the European elections, or: How to modernise elections?

Christoph Bieber gives an impulse at the meeting of the "Data Democracy" working group of Initiative D21 and sheds light on the digital status of the elections to the European Parliament.

1. July 2024

On 2 July 2024, Prof. Christoph Bieber will give a keynote speech at the meeting of the “Data Democracy” working group of the D21 initiative, which will be held as a hybrid event. In the super election year 2024, around half of the world’s population will be called to vote, including important elections in the European Union, the USA and India.

In his keynote, Christoph Bieber looks at the “digital status” of the European Parliament elections. These elections offer a wide range of opportunities to study political processes, not only in terms of results and voter behaviour, but also in terms of voting methods. While the classic pen and paper model dominates in Germany, digitally supported voting procedures are used in various countries. Using current examples, the event will provide an overview of modernisation approaches for political elections and ask whether artificial intelligence could play a role in the future.
