“Does participation in online political discussions lead to increased political participation?”

So do online political discussions have a demonstrable mobilisation effect? A panel survey with embedded experiments showed that mere participation had no effect, but active debating led to increased signing of a petition and donations of money.

The ECPR General Conference took place from 22 to 26 August 2022, at which Gerhard Vowe gave a presentation on the question “Does participation in online political discussions lead to increased political participation?”. So do online political discussions have a demonstrable mobilisation effect? A panel survey with embedded experiments showed that mere participation had no effect, but active debating led to increased signing of a petition and donations of money.
