Under the theme “Communicating Environmental Justice: Many Voices, One Planet”, the annual International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Conference will take place from July 13 to 17, 2025, hosted by the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The IAMCR is a global professional association of media and communication researchers with over 2,800 members from more than 100 countries. The annual conference serves as a central forum for presenting new research, exchanging methods, and building networks across disciplinary, cultural, and geographical boundaries. Its work bridges the integration of critical research into education and policy debates, with a strong focus on academic freedom, global collaboration, and the societal impact of media and communication.
As part of the Gender and Communication Section, Dr. Mitra Shamsi, guest researcher at CAIS, will present her paper titled “Dokhtaran-e Vatan: Navigating the Nation through Digital Feminist Activism in Iran’s ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ Movement” on July 15, as part of the panel “Politics, Activism, and Social Movements for Justice”. In her presentation, she examines how digital platforms became contested spaces in the aftermath of the WLF movement, where Iranian activists, state actors, and diaspora oppositional groups articulated competing gendered narratives around women and the nation. She explores how activists – both inside Iran and in the diaspora – engaged with digital affordances to produce counter-narratives that disrupt dominant nationalist framings and offer alternative visions of political agency. In addition to presenting her research, Dr. Mitra Shamsi will also serve as a discussant for the panel.
