As part of the project “KI in der Lehrerausbildung” (AI in Teacher Education) led by Daniel Bohn and Sandra Rosalen at the University of Wuppertal, Jana Baum, a researcher in the CAIS research program “Digital Democratic Innovations”, holds an online workshop on the topic “Ethics and AI” on May 27, 2025. Participants include teachers from schools in Dortmund, Essen, Munich, Cologne, and Ahaus.

Jana Baum’s presentation addresses the question of how an ethically reflective and self-determined approach to artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom can be developed. Drawing on ethics as a philosophical discipline, the focus is not on concrete sets of instructions for action, but rather on what is essential to any given action and the role that the concepts of good and evil play within it. Central to this topic is the question of how we can preserve our capacity to act when dealing with artificial intelligence. Together with the teachers and based on concrete examples they bring with them, the workshop explores what conditions are necessary for a self-determined use of AI in teaching. Fundamental questions are discussed, including potential risks to the quality of education, the knowledge required to use AI responsibly, and whether AI represents a necessary evil or can contribute to improving teaching.
