The International Symposium on End-User Development (IS-EUD) is a biennial conference focused on research that empowers non-experts to create and customize software to their individual needs. It brings together researchers from fields like Human-Computer-Interaction and Software Engineering to explore technologies – from no-code tools to generative AI – that enable user-driven software development. Both theoretical insights and practical innovations that make software development more accessible for everyone will be highlighted. The symposium will take place in Munich from June 16 to 18, 2025.
Dr. Aditya Kumar Purohit, postdoc at CAIS in the research program “Design of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence”, will present his joint paper titled “From Digital Self-Control Apps to iOS Shortcuts: Enabling Privacy-Centric Wellbeing Research Without Code” together with Alberto Monge Roffarello (Politecnico di Torino) on June 18, 2025. The presentation will take place as part of Session 3 “AI for End-User Empowerment: Personalization and Wellbeing” from 11:40 AM to 12:00 PM.
Their research explores how iOS Shortcuts can be used to replicate features of existing Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs), enabling researchers to design and evaluate wellbeing interventions without the need for coding expertise, while addressing privacy concerns. Findings from a user study involving 193 participants suggest that manually recreating interventions through the users may help reduce privacy concerns when compared to using pre-built options. The paper contributes to the growing field of accessible, privacy-sensitive research in digital wellbeing and highlights the potential of no-code approaches in empowering end users and researchers alike.
