Infographic on the federal election 2025: election organization, parties, logistics, municipalities

The DDI team has developed an interactive graphic which depicts the challenges of election organization in the areas of electoral bodies, parties, logistics and municipalities.

20. February 2025

The team of the research program “DDI – Digitale demokratische Innovationen”, particularly the researchers Anne Goldmann, Aryan Shooshtari and Christoph Bieber, have developed a concept for an interactive graphic in recent weeks. This graphic complements the existing informational material from the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb) regarding the upcoming federal election.

The graphic illustrates the relevant actors, processes and structures that ensure the essential foundations for the conduct prior to the election on February 23. This is an area that has hardly been researched in political and social science election research to date. The shortened deadlines for parties and candidates, but also the very reduced lead time for the organization and conduct of postal voting, introduce major challenges, especially at municipal level.

The interactive infographic (available online as from February 21, 2025) marks the first milestone of a larger study, which will define DDI team’s course of work in the coming months. With close inspection of the processes in the sense of “process tracing” as a basis, a stakeholder workshop is planned to be organized in the course of early summer to look specifically for opportunities to modernize elections. Particular attention will be paid to the use and embedding of digital processes.
