Insights on AI-support for transitions between individual and collaborative learning

Prof. Nikol Rummel speaks at the University of Oslo about the interplay between AI and teachers in the learning process.

9. April 2025

In this open lecture on April 24, 2025, Prof. Nikol Rummel, from the Center for Advanced Internet Studies, presents research on co-orchestration between AI and teacher in managing collaborative and individual learning modes.

Abstract

Enabling seamless transitions between individual and collaborative learning offers great potential for enhanced learning but also poses classroom management challenges. In a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded project, we explored how technology can help teachers manage these transitions. Collaborating with teachers, we developed Pair-Up, a co-orchestration tool that dynamically groups students during shifts between individual and collaborative activities with intelligent tutoring systems.  In a controlled experiment, we assessed the impact on classroom dynamics and learning outcomes, as well as teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the technology. In my talk, I will present an overview of the project, summarize key findings, and discuss implications, challenges, and the evolving role of AI in education.
