Prof. Dr Nikol Rummel was invited as a keynote speaker at BI.teach – Day for Teaching 2024 at Bielefeld University on 20 November. In her presentation entitled “Artificial intelligence in education: Possibilities, opportunities and a critical discussion”, she took a critical look at the hype surrounding artificial intelligence in education.
Since the publication of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, the use of artificial intelligence in educational contexts has gained considerable momentum. It is often predicted in the public debate that AI will revolutionise education. In her keynote speech, Nikol Rummel put these assumptions to the test.
Looking at the current state of research, Rummel discussed the opportunities that AI can offer for learning and teaching, as well as the limitations and risks associated with its use. In particular, she addressed the possibilities of generative AI, but also emphasised the need for critical reflection in order to use educational technologies effectively and responsibly.
