The BR science podcast “IQ – Wissenschaft und Forschung“ explores current research and controversies across various fields such as technology, astronomy, medicine, archaeology, biology and nature. In the episode “Myth or Fact? Filter Bubbles on the Internet”, radio journalist Dr. Daniela Remus investigates the extent to which social media and algorithms create echo chambers and fill users’ feeds with one-sided content. She examines the topic from various scientific perspectives — one of her interviewees is CAIS researcher Josephine B. Schmitt. In the podcast, Josephine B. Schmitt explains how our online behavior and social networking influence algorithms and help shape the content we see in our feeds. Moreover, stricter media regulations are increasingly leading to (partially) closed digital spaces. While these can provide protection for marginalized minorities, they also have the potential to become radicalizing echo chambers — in contrast to the concept of the “filter bubble.”
The podcast episode has been available since May 28, 2025, on all major podcast platforms as well as in the BR media library.
