On November 6, 2025, Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt, scientific coordinator at CAIS, will give a presentation on “Politik auf TikTok und Co.? Digitale Räume und neue Formen politischer Bildung” (EN: Politics on TikTok and Beyond? Digital Spaces and New Forms of Political Education) as part of the interdisciplinary lecture series “Bildungsforschung” (EN: Educational Research) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Digital platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have long been central spaces for political information and debate – especially for young people. New actors such as influencers, activists, and innovative educational formats bring socio-political topics to their followers’ feeds in entertaining short videos, thus opening up new approaches for political education. At the same time, challenges such as algorithmic attention logic, polarization, disinformation, and generative AI threaten democratic debate in the digital space. The presentation focuses on discussing what these developments mean for our understanding of autonomy, citizenship, and democracy – and how digital spaces can be shaped to promote democracy.
