Mennatullah Hendawy will give a poster flashtalk on the topic “Citizen Participation in the United Arab Emirates’ National AI Strategy: a discourse analysis”. In their contribution“After the Hype: The Uncertain Future of Smart Cities”, researchers from the research programme“Digital Democratic Innovations” address the question of whether we may be entering a “post-smart city era” as the crucial aspects of “smart” and “city” become blurred. In this context, they discuss what this era might entail. Is it smart regions, AI cities or even the end of smart cities?
On the second day of the conference, Josephine B. Schmitt and Samuel T. Simon will present the results of a study entitled“What are people’s visions for the future when it comes to digital transformation and sustainability?”. As part of the study, they asked people to draw their visions for the future. In addition to utopias and dystopias, the drawings convey concrete visions of how a sustainable and digitalised life can – or cannot – succeed. The pictures invite us to reflect on how important it is to include ethical considerations in the development and use of digital technologies.
