The scientific advisory board of the EU project TWIN4DEM has been strengthened since November 2025 by Prof. Dr. Johannes Breuer, head of the CAIS research department “Research Data & Methods,” as a new member.
TWIN4DEM is a European research project dedicated to strengthening democratic resilience. It employs methods from the field of Computational Social Science (CSS) and a so-called Digital Twin approach. The project aims to uncover the causes of democratic decline and provide policymakers, civil society, and technology providers with practical, actionable solutions. To achieve this, TWIN4DEM develops agent-based models that, for example, analyze the role of power concentration and threats to rule-of-law institutions. In addition, the project produces open, FAIR, and GDPR-compliant tools to process and analyze large political and social datasets in real time.
The project works closely with policymakers, civil society organizations, and technology providers to test policy scenarios, identify threats to democracy, and develop actionable measures. At the same time, TWIN4DEM promotes participatory research and knowledge exchange to engage citizens, scholars, and stakeholders, supporting long-term transparent, robust, and sustainable governance.
