Society as an “Algorithmic Social Machine”?

A chapter by former CAIS Fellow Harald Gapski has been published in an edited volume on Visual Literacy.

7. April 2025

Harald Gapski (Grimme Institute and Fellow at CAIS from October 2022 to March 2023) has published the article “Society as an ‘Algorithmic Social Machine’? Visual-Metaphorical Machine Imagery for Digital Enlightenment” in the newly released anthology “Visual Literacy: Image Competencies in Digital Media”. In his contribution, he explores how the increasing intrusion of data-processing machines and algorithms into social processes is changing society. He examines how the interactions between humans, machines, and society can be visualized and what understanding citizens should develop about it.
