Josephine B. Schmitt and Hendrik Heuer will deliver a talk titled “From Augustus to Trump – Why Disinformation Remains a Problem and What We Can Do About It” on December 29, 2024, at the 38th Chaos Communication Congress (38C3) organized by the Chaos Computer Club.
About their talk
Despite intensive research, we often lag behind current developments in the field of disinformation. In this talk, they explain why addressing disinformation is so challenging and present concrete approaches to solutions.
Although research has already provided well-established insights into the dissemination and impact of disinformation, and effective prevention and intervention measures are being discussed at many levels, we are still trailing behind the actual developments and societal consequences of disinformation. Effectively addressing the various forms of disinformation often proves elusive.
With a focus on current research, they provide an overview of solutions to combat disinformation. This talk aims to refine terminology for public debate and address the critical question: What can and should be understood as disinformation? Furthermore, they will discuss why dealing with disinformation is so difficult and explore the individual, societal, and political challenges that make it so. Finally, they answer the question: What needs to be done?
