On March 17, Dr. Marco Wähner will give a talk as part of the Social Media Access Days 2026 in Frankfurt on the reusability of a Wikipedia data corpus in the context of the snap federal election 2025.

10. March 2026

Dr. Marco Wähner, a research associate in the CAIS research department Research Data & Methods, will give a talk as part of the Social Media Access Days 2026 in Frankfurt on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The talk focuses on the topic “Reusability of a Wikipedia data corpus in the context of the snap federal election 2025.” It is part of Session 1, “Reuse of Existing Data and Corpora,” which takes place from 1:45 PM to 3:15 PM. In addition to Marco Wähner, the contribution also involves Lucas Enzmann and Jan Dennis Gumz (both from the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS) as well as Ahrabhi Kathirgamalingam (GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences).

About the Contribution

The contribution is embedded in interdisciplinary research on the role of Wikipedia as a source of information in political discourse. It focuses on the planning, collection, analysis, and reusability of Wikipedia articles in connection with the snap election of the German Bundestag in the period from November 2024 to January 2025. The aim is to present a data corpus that is, on the one hand, enriched with metadata – such as the average number of edits – and, on the other hand, can be linked with additional data sources. The contribution is motivated by the question of what challenges arise in the archiving and reuse of dynamic information spaces in the context of major political events.

About the Conference

This year, the Social Media Access Days will take place from March 17 to 19 at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main. The conference theme is “Social media data between research and infrastructures – sustainable archiving, indexing, and provision.” The conference addresses challenges and solution approaches related to the archiving, indexing, and sustainable use of social media data as part of the digital cultural heritage. It focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration as well as technical, legal, and ethical issues in order to ensure long-term access to and reuse of these dynamic data.
