Urban Design Through Play

At the World Urban Forum, Dr. Mennatullah Hendawy shared insights into a game-based approach to education.

3. December 2024

On November 7, 2024, Dr. Mennatullah Hendawy, a postdoctoral researcher in the Digital Democratic Innovations research program at CAIS, participated in the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo, Egypt. Together with Dr. Nancy M. Abdel-Moneim (Associate Professor at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, Smart Village Campus), she implemented game-based learning in a postgraduate course at AASTMT, Smart Village Campus.

Their approach aimed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, resulting in five analog games that encouraged students to integrate climate considerations into urban development. The course emphasized practical solutions aligned with global sustainability goals.

A key takeaway from the session was its success in immersing participants in experiential learning, transforming traditional classroom settings into dynamic, hands-on problem-solving spaces.
