There are many public complaints about hate speech and false news on the net. However, it is often unclear which communication norms are actually being violated. In the article, five basic norms of communication are anthropologically justified by their function for cooperative communication, such as the information norm or the relational norm. This is the basis for a typology of incivility that can be tested empirically.
