WISSENSWERTE – the central dialogue forum for science journalism in German-speaking countries – will once again bring together around 400 participants this year to discuss the role of media, science, and the public. From September 29 to October 1, 2025, the forum will take place at Freie Universität Berlin.
As part of the program, Josephine B. Schmitt, Scientific Coordinator at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), will speak on September 30, 2025, in the workshop “What Helps Against Fake News?”. Alongside Prof. Dr. Edda Humprecht (University of Jena), Prof. Dr. Andreas Jungherr (University of Bamberg/bidt), Dr. Philipp Müller (University of Mannheim), and moderator Bastian Zimmermann (Science Media Center Germany), she will discuss current research findings, challenges, and approaches to tackling disinformation.
The focus will include new insights into effective countermeasures against so-called fake news, the state of the art in automated disinformation detection, strategies of “inoculation,” and the growing role of deepfakes in digital disinformation campaigns. The panel will also reflect on the responsibilities of journalism in addressing digital forgeries and manipulative narratives – and where science journalism needs to break new ground.
