An open atmosphere and lively exchange, an innovative (thinking) workshop for creative solutions: The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) invites participants to its first international conference “Creating Spaces for Digital Futures” at the Makerspace of Ruhr University Bochum. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister of Culture and Science, Ina Brandes, will take part in a panel discussion on the freedom of science.

This special issue is dedicated to the emergence, practices, and dynamics of digital public spaces, with a particular focus on inequalities and the socio-technical configurations that shape access, participation, and representation. We invite contributions from various disciplines that critically analyze the tensions, challenges, and future perspectives of digital publics at the intersection of technology, participation, and democracy.
