On November 6, 2025, Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt will speak at the University of Duisburg-Essen about political education on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. She will explore opportunities, new approaches, and key actors, as well as challenges such as misinformation, polarization, and algorithmic logics – and discuss how digital spaces can be designed to promote democracy.
The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) participated in today’s exchange between Federal Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger and the network of Institutes for Digitalization Research (NIfD) at the Weizenbaum Institute. As a network member, CAIS is committed to interdisciplinary research on the societal impacts of digitalization and bringing scientific perspectives into public dialogue.
Since 2021, the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) has been part of the Network of Institutes for Digitalization Research (in German: Netzwerk der Institute für Digitalisierungsforschung = NIfD). Together with five other institutions, it is committed to independent, interdisciplinary research on digital transformation.
In their book chapter, Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt and Sandra Kero examine how right-wing extremists use social media to make their narratives immersive and engage their audiences through creative strategies and algorithmic amplification.
On November 1, Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt will take part in the panel discussion “Digital Spaces for Democracy” at the re:publica spin-off at the NRW Forum Düsseldorf. The discussion will focus on key challenges and opportunities for digital public spheres.
