  4. Mechanisms for explaining polarization within groups

Henri Mütschele, Sarah-Michelle Nienhaus

This study develops a theoretical model to explain intra-group polarization, that is, the tendency for positions within like-minded groups to further differentiate or intensify through interaction. The model complements existing approaches, which primarily explain polarization through conformity pressure, by adding the perspective of individual differentiation motives within groups. Using the example of political parties and social movements, it examines how horizontal communication among supporters and vertical communication between the base and leadership influence opinion formation.
