Digital Diaspora and Automediality: Indonesian Female Vloggers and the In-Between Space

Symbolbild Kolloquium

The project aims to evaluate automediality in YouTube vlogs by Indonesian female vloggers in relation to the role of connectivity and sociality in the digital diaspora. The analysis will look into how these vloggers construct their identity in the in-between space of their hostland and homeland characterizing the nature of „diaspora“ that is always in limbo. As these vloggers migrated abroad, archiving and documenting their everyday lives in their vlogs are not only to showcase them to their family and friends back home, but also, in relation to automediality, to become a platform in examining their changing identities. The narratives they convey in these vlogs are never fixed and are affected by the participatory space of YouTube. As argued by Kennedy and other scholars on automediality in digital media, the self is influenced by all the participants in the space in this case mostly the imagined audience of these vlogs. Research findings are expected to evaluate the concepts of automediality in the context of digital diaspora.
