Applying Multi-sited Mobile Ethnography in Studying Digital Activism

Symbolbild Kolloquium

Multi-sited mobile ethnography is an innovative methodology for studying complex and multilayered digital phenomena. This approach adapts ethnographic techniques to the fluid nature of digital spaces, allowing researchers to follow discussions and practices across multiple online platforms and offline contexts. Unlike conventional methods focusing on a single location, it constructs an ethnographic place through the movements of ethnographers in various spaces following ongoing discussions and developments.

This presentation will share experiences of applying multi-sited mobile ethnography to study digital feminist activism in Iran, offering insights into its practical application in this complex field. It argues that the flexibility of this approach is crucial for investigating rapidly changing digital spaces, enabling researchers to track the formation and evolution of digital discourses, the distribution of movement artifacts, and to understand the interplay between online and physical activist practices.
