Philosophical Digitization Research II

CAIS Medium Poster

In order to understand digitization, it must be thought about and researched in a transdisciplinary way. How? The majority of the members of the working group consider it comparatively promising to address it from the perspective of cultural, social and technological philosophy as a plethora of cultural processes. The hitherto underrepresented reflective competence of relevantly interested philosophers should be brought into the ongoing multidisciplinary research on digitalisation. With the help of philosophical methods (especially conceptual construction and reconstruction, normative and axiological analysis) and interdisciplinary interface competence of systematic philosophy, it should be possible to gain new possibilities for description, evaluation and dialogue that are valuable in at least three respects:

  • Interdisciplinarily valuable for the discursive networking of digitisation-related research in all disciplines;
  • of prospective practical value for enlightened and responsible design in AI development and application; furthermore
  • civically valuable for enlightened public political discussion about desirable and undesirable technocultural futures in the light of identifiable standards of practical reasonableness that keep open the reference to justice and ideals of the good life.

A meeting of the WG is planned in June in the form of a video conference on the topic of “Algorithmically Transformed Power Relations”, as well as an expanded meeting in July in Presence, in order to bring together results and, if necessary, to outline further research needs. The work of the WG is to be made accessible to the interested public in a variety of media formats. In two workshops, the topic “Algorithmically transformed power relations” will be dealt with and brought together with discussion results and suggestions from the earlier workshops on relations of understanding, relations of responsibility and relations of reason. Further research needs for the networked further work of the WG beyond the time of the second meeting are to be identified.

Dates

28.10.2021 – 29.10.2021 Workshop CAIS-IV: Algorithmically transformed power relations

  • What are we talking about when we speak of the “power of algorithms”?
  • How can we, how should we, understand the meaning of such attributions, objectively, i.e. with reference to specific socio-technical systems, as well as imaginatively, with reference to culturally widespread patterns of meaning?
  • If in given power relations (=in certain controllable relations of social forces) certain changes occur (or are accepted or brought about in a planned way) by enabling and also empowering algorithmic machines to simulate and also perform person-typical intelligence performances – how do such transformations of practices translate into changes within individual as well as shared orders of reasons (Spaces of Reasons) that orient our “rational decisions” and further our behaviour?

28.03.2022 – 30.03.2022 Conference CAIS-V: Synthesis – Our Research Findings and their Perspective Relevance

A second, more extended meeting of the WG aims at a preliminary synthesis. We will try to bring together the main discussion results and suggestions from the earlier workshops on relations of understanding, relations of responsibility, relations of reason with those from the meeting on the question of algorithmically transformed power relations. Further research needs for the networked further work of the WG beyond the time of the second meeting are to be identified. We will also consider how our results can be made useful for interdisciplinary connections and for public discussion.
