Mitra Shamsi will be participating in the 2024 International Winter School on ‚Social Media, Surveillance, and Societies of Control‘ at The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS) from January 6 to 11, 2024.

During this winter school, various activities are planned, including public lectures, roundtables, workshops, and the presentation of research papers in closed sessions.

Her presentation revolves around the restrictions that digital activism imposes on feminist activists and women’s rights advocates in Iran. She argues that, despite all the opportunities opened to women’s rights activists by the affordances of digital media, there have also been some constraints in their digital activism. Therefore, she aims to shed light on these constraints, illustrating cases of feminist activists being targeted in coordinated cyberattacks and online interactions. Additionally, I will discuss how activism is tracked by the government, leading to their identification, threats, and, in some cases, arrest.
