AG DAMMA: Digital Archive of Memorialization of Mass Atrocities (Group)

There is an urgent need to understand how digital technology transforms the preservation/erasure of individual and collective memories of mass atrocities given the rapid growth of memorial activities online, but also the rise of denialism and misinformation associated with the past suffering. This workshop brings together academics and heritage practitioners to advance research and knowledge concerning online mass atrocity memorial practices. Using two cases (Sobibor and Babn Yar), the working group will scrutinize conceptual and practical challenges of archiving online memorial practices and discuss possible analytic strategies. The working group will initiate the establishment of a network of academics and practitioners interested in archiving online content related to memorialisation of mass atrocities. The workshop will help us identify a roadmap to implement the infrastructure for the digital archiving of a pilot study which will help us to prepare a funding bid focused on the two Holocaust sites.
