Matthias Begenat heads the Science Communication department at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum. He creates, plans and moderates formats in which research is presented in a clear, understandable and relevant way. He was and is involved in the conception and further development of CAIS as an institute for digitalization research.
In 2024, he coordinated the “Taskforce AI in Education” for the CAIS, which developed recommendations for the NRW state government. He was a jury member for the AI Special Prize, which was awarded as part of the Grimme Online Award 2024. He is also a member of the task force “AI in Science Communication” of the FactoryWisskomm of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
In 2015, Matthias Begenat received his PhD in communication science from the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. He conducts research on science communication in digitization research and in particular on the use of AI in science communication. In addition, he has been active in various scientific projects (e.g. in the Delphi study on the future of digitization research). He is also a lecturer at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

- From 2016 to 2017, he was employed as an officer at the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia (LfM).
- in 2015, he completed his doctorate in communication science at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf on the topic ‘Public sphere – for everyone? Topics and information repertoires in political milieus’. From 2010 to 2015, he researched and taught at the HHU Düsseldorf as a research assistant.
- He completed his studies at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Politics, Economics and Society / Media Studies, Bachelor) and at the HHU Düsseldorf (Political Communication, Master).
