Introduction:

In the field of education, the synergy between technology and pedagogy has led to new approaches that allow the traditional practices of the classroom to be reshaped. In this context, Artificial Intelligence is increasingly present, but its use in education is varied and far from universal. One concern that often resonates in the discussion about artificial intelligence is that such systems make non-transparent and no longer comprehensible decisions. To counter this concern, it is necessary to understand how such systems work. In this paper, we introduce Intelligent Tutoring Systems and explain how learning can be personalised using these tutoring systems. Personalisation allows learners to follow individual learning paths even though they are all pursuing the same learning goal. In this way, teachers can use Intelligent Tutoring Systems to facilitate personalised learning even in large and heterogeneous learning groups.
