Abstract

“Data is the new oil” – this bold slogan from the advertising industry illustrates the boom in the analysis and use of digital data over the last two decades. Commercial providers use this data to collect more and more detailed information about their users and customers in order to personalize and further develop their products.
But digital data can be used for more than just maximizing profits. (Social) scientific research is also increasingly using such data and researching behavior in a digital context. Just like the “old oil”, digital research data offers enormous potential, but also major challenges. This issue of easy_social_sciences continues the series on digitalization (see easy 68). We would like to provide an insight into the diverse disciplinary, methodological and content-related approaches to research with and about digital data in order to give an impression of how they can be used to open up new research potential.
