Philosophical methods and being public philosophers

by Charlotte Franziska Unruh, Susanne Hahn, and Eugen Pissarskoi

How are the use of different methods and the roles philosophers can take in public discourse related?

Artificial intelligence and related technologies raise philosophical questions about privacy, autonomy and democracy: Consider, for example, the debate about whether the use of facial recognition technologies should be allowed in public spaces. Issues around the environment and climate change also raise philosophical questions, including justice towards present and future generations. And pandemics raise questions about the distribution of medical resources and the justification of restrictive measures in the name of health. These are some examples of public debates in which academic philosophers are involved. But what can philosophers contribute to these public debates?
