The Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt), the Center for Advanced Internet Studies(CAIS) and the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society (WI) have developed a joint qualification programme in digitisation research to promote their young researchers. The advanced training programme for doctoral students and postdocs imparts important basic knowledge about the research field as well as practical skills for interdisciplinary research work, thereby bundling the expertise of the three institutes. The programme was successfully launched with the reading seminar “Computer Power and Human Reason by Joseph Weizenbaum” on 13 April 2023, led by Weizenbaum director Christoph Neuberger and Christian Strippel, head of the WI Methods Lab.

In future, junior researchers will be able to acquire certificates in four modularised key topics: The module Basic Knowledge of Digitisation Research makes junior researchers capable of speaking on fundamental questions of digitisation and its research. The module Data Competence and Digital Methods teaches competences for the informed handling of data, while also addressing ethical issues. In the module Science Communication and Co-Creation, researchers can learn how to communicate with different publics and involve important stakeholders in their research. The module Agile Research shows how the different approaches of agile research can be applied to digitisation research and reflects on the philosophies behind them. All modules have in common that they support the individual profiling of the young researchers theoretically and practically.

The Digitisation Research Qualification Programme is the next step in the cooperation between bidt, CAIS and the Weizenbaum Institute in the area of career development, which began in 2021 with an official cooperation agreement. Complementary to the offers of the qualification programme, the joint networking event of the three institutes for PhD students and postdocs will take place again in 2023: The virtual Digitisation Research and Network Meeting (DigiMeet) is dedicated this year to the topic of “Diversity in digital transformation”. All researchers are cordially invited to this open networking event on 28 November 2023. The Call for Participation will follow in June.
