Between curiosity and hype: AI tools in journalism

The moment of revelation that ChatGPT generated the article brings fewer and fewer moments of surprise and sometimes even eye-rolling after the last six months of the initial wave of enthusiasm.

4. September 2023

Anyone who has dealt with generative AI tools has surfed the first wave of enthusiasm and often finds themselves caught between enthusiasm, disillusionment and a compelling curiosity for the current developments that are irreversible for journalism.
Because in everyday work it becomes apparent: the interviews from the shoot? They have long since been automatically transcribed, and a synthetic avatar speaks in the new podcast. The soundtrack was produced by an AI.

In our workshop for journalists on 4 October 2023 at the Centre for IT Security in Bochum, we want to get into conversation and reflect:

  • How can we ensure that automated content is of good quality and trustworthy?
  • Which systems do we want to work with?
  • What craft skills will be needed in the near future?
  • How is AI already being used in journalism?

Programme:

1 pm: Welcome and exchange on the current discourse
3pm: How is AI being used in moving image journalism?
Sascha Devigne: STUDIO 47 with live presentation of the AI tool “BotCast “‘
Alexander Heine (Audiotainment Südwest) “BigGPT – the AI radio experiment”
5 p.m.: Reflection and exchange of ideas
6 p.m.: Dinner and conclusion

The workshop is open to 15 journalists who want to know how and where AI is already being used in journalism, where the limits lie and how we can find a balance between curiosity and hype.

Workshop organisation and contact persons: Dr. Esther Laukötter (CAIS), Sandra Kero (CAIS), Johannes Meyer (journalist and moderator)
