Susanne Hahn with a lecture at the interdisciplinary conference “Trusting Documents: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Document Theory”.

Trusting practices have developed to assess “analogue” documents as “genuine”. Digital communication and the possibility of generating image or language material challenge these practices. Is it sufficient to establish new document characteristics and user competencies to determine trustworthiness or are institutions rather needed to ensure trust in digital or AI-generated content?

Documents of remote communication have the spatiotemporal separation of sender and receiver as a core problem. For this central question of social context formation, selective detailed analyses and theory-historical longitudinal sections will be used to investigate how trust, which is indispensable for successful long-distance communication, can be described praxeologically as a basic category and fed into machine-processable models.
