A short presentation (“intervention”) on the role of AI systems in the electoral process. Central questions/theses: Modernising elections with computer technology is already difficult enough (e.g. Brazil, USA or Estonia), so why still use AI systems? AI should only be used in elections if it can significantly improve the process (there are no examples of this yet). Moreover, electoral management bodies need to ensure that AI use takes place under controlled conditions and does not undermine public trust in elections (this does not make things easier).

This 15-minute short presentation by Christoph Bieber is produced in the context of the conference “Artificial Intelligence and Electoral Integrity” and is organised by the “Venice Commission” at the European Council (https://www.coe.int/en/web/electoral-management-bodies-conference/programme-and-interventions)

The conference will take place on 14 November 2022 in the Council of Europe/Agora Building in Strasbourg.
